Monday, November 18, 2024 – The Science Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) held a guest lecture featuring Dr. Joe Nell T. Marzan, an expert in science education from the University of Northern Philippines. The lecture carried the overarching theme:
“Microteaching Lesson Study: Fostering Competence for Inquiry-based Science Teaching, One Lesson at a Time.”
This academic event was part of the program’s efforts to enhance pedagogical knowledge and professional competence of future science educators through international collaboration and discourse.
In his presentation, Dr. Marzan addressed four interrelated topics:
- Microteaching Lesson Study: Fostering Teaching Competence for Sustainable Development
- Inquiry-Based Science Teaching: Models and New Pedagogical Trends
- Planning, Implementing, and Evaluating Inquiry Science Lessons
- Integrating Technology into Inquiry Science Lessons
Dr. Marzan emphasized that inquiry-based teaching is fundamental for preparing students to think critically and solve problems, especially in the context of sustainable development. He also introduced various international lesson study models and how microteaching, when combined with reflective practices, can significantly improve instructional quality in science classrooms.
The session was attended by students and lecturers of the Science Education Program, who engaged in an interactive discussion and Q&A session. Participants expressed great enthusiasm, noting that the lecture enriched their understanding of both theory and practice in science teaching.
The event reflects the program’s commitment to global academic engagement and continuous improvement in science education practices. It also opened up possibilities for future academic collaboration between UNS and the University of Northern Philippines.
